The COSMOS Survey: Hubble Space Telescope / Advanced Camera for Surveys (HST/ACS) Observations and Data Processing
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe the details of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys / Wide Field Channel (ACS/WFC) observations of the COSMOS field, including the data calibration and processing procedures. We obtained a total of 583 orbits of HST ACS/WFC imaging in the F814W filter, covering a field that is 1.64 degrees2 in area, the largest contiguous field ever imaged with HST. The median exposure depth across the field is 2028 seconds (one HST orbit), achieving a limiting point-source depth AB(F814W) = 27.2 (5 sigma). We also present details about the astrometric image registration, distortion removal and image combination using MultiDrizzle, as well as motivating the choice of our final pixel scale (30 milliarcseconds per pixel), based on the requirements for weak lensing science. The final set of images are publicly available through the archive sites at IPAC and STScI, along with further documentation on how they were produced. COSMOS : Hubble Space Telescope Observations
The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) was initiated with an extensive allocation (590 orbits in Cycles 12-13) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for high resolution imaging. Here we review the characteristics of the HST imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and parallel observations with NICMOS and WFPC2. A square field (1.8⊓⊔) has been imaged with single-orbit ACS I-F814W expos...
متن کاملPixel-based correction for Charge Transfer Inefficiency in the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys
Charge Transfer Inefficiency (CTI) due to radiation damage above the Earth’s atmosphere creates spurious trailing in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. Radiation damage also creates unrelated warm pixels – but these happen to be perfect for measuring CTI. We model CTI in the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS)/Wide Field Channel and construct a physically motivated correction scheme. This opera...
متن کاملSearch for Cosmic Strings in the COSMOS Survey
We search the COSMOS survey for pairs of galaxies consistent with the gravitational lensing signature of a cosmic string. The COSMOS survey imaged 1.64 square degrees using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Our technique includes estimates of the efficiency for finding the lensed galaxy pair. We find no evidence for cosmic strings with a mass per uni...
متن کاملStatus of the Advanced Camera for Surveys
The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), installed in the Hubble Space Telescope in March 2002, will significantly extend HST ’s deep, survey imaging capabilities. ACS has met, or exceeded all of its key performance specifications. In this paper we present an introductory review of the in-flight performance of the instrument.
متن کاملOptimal Galaxy Shape Measurements for Weak Lensing Applications Using the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys
We present three-epoch multiband (V606, i775, z850) measurements of galaxy shapes using the “polar shapelet” or Laguerre-expansions method with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) data, obtained as part of the Great Observatories Origin Deep Survey (GOODS). We take advantage of the unique features of the GOODS/ACS Fields to test the reliability of this relatively...
